At the start of the year several people involved in iEarth attended the Nordic Geological Winter Meeting 2024. This year the winter meeting was held in Gothenburg from Wednesday, January 12, to Friday, January 14th. These people included among others Anders Mattias Lundmark, Kirsty Dunnett, Carly Faber and five iEarth students, Elena Victoria Brattebø, Siri Tungland, Lisa Julianne Nystad, Marie Aas and Markus Haugen.

At the first day Elena and Siri presented in the education section of the conference. The title of their presentation was «Students as partners – obstacles, possibilities and solutions for geoscience higher education». They shared insights from a student workshop organized by Elena and Mattias ahead of the annual Geolearning Forum in November 2023, Oslo. The presentation focused on some of the problems the students had identified with today’s geoscience higher education and proposed solutions to enhance the quality of the education. The main take away from the presentation was the importance of involving students in all aspects of teaching and learning, whether through student active learning or course (re)design.

Each day of the conference ended in a poster session, during which iEarth contributed with several posters. Lisa attended with the poster «Facilitating student engagement in geological fieldwork using Activity Bingo». Marie and Marcus attended with the poster «Improving geoscience education: How course and student representatives work at university of Oslo, Norway». Both posters sparked engaging conversations around learning and teaching in geoscience higher education. We also got the opportunity to spread iEarth to people who had never heard of the centre and the work we do.

Throughout the remainder of the conference, we attended various sessions covering interesting topics related to our geoscience interests. Social gatherings during the three days, including an icebreaker and a conference dinner provided excellent opportunities for networking. In summary, it was a great conference where we as students got the chance to represent iEarth, learn more about different geological topics and network with the geoscience community.
